Olympic medalist visits community cycling facility in Thorpe Edge
18 February 2026
Young people in Bradford had an unforgettable experience as BMX and Track cycling legend Shanaze Reade visited the Springfield bike track yesterday.
The Springfield bike track, which opened at the end of 2025 thanks to a partnership between The Springfield Centre in Thorpe Edge and Bradford Council with funding from the JU:MP Programme and Sport England, has already been enthusiastically embraced by the local community. Now, plans to activate the site with regular cycling sessions, bike repairs and guided rides are taking shape.
The visit from Shanaze Reade, a former BMX and Track cycling medalist, represents a major milestone in efforts to inspire local children and young people to develop skills and passion for cycling and active travel. As part of British Cycling’s partnership with Bradford Metropolitan District Council, Community Coach Rebecca Jones has been working closely with The Springfield Centre to activate the new pump track and engage local young people in BMX. Rebecca arranged for Shanaze to join her at a special holiday club session to inspire the next generation of riders.
The day began with attendees meeting Shanaze for an exciting Q&A session, giving young people the chance to ask questions and hear about her journey to becoming a world-class athlete. Children headed outside to the track, where they were kitted up with bikes and helmets before taking part in a coaching session led by both Rebecca and Shanaze. The session included a time trial activity, allowing participants to put their new skills into practice.
Following the on-track action, there was a debrief session where race winners received prizes, and everyone had the opportunity to capture the moment with photos alongside the Olympic medallist.
The Springfield bike track activation programme creates regular opportunities for young people to gain confidence on two wheels, learn essential cycling skills, and discover the joy of active travel.
The event represents another step forward in creating a healthier, more physically active Bradford District where every young person has access to quality sporting opportunities and inspiring role models.
