Community partnership transforms Sue Belcher outdoor space into hub for active lives
26 October 2026
A once neglected outdoor space at the Sue Belcher Centre in Bracken Bank, Keighley, has been transformed into a welcoming community hub where people of all ages can get outdoors, get active and connect.
The project has been driven by Bracken Bank District Community Association (BBDCA), whose trustees have worked tirelessly to secure investment and bring partners together to create more opportunities for the local community.
The site on Bracken Bank Avenue previously offered limited opportunities for physical activity, with a rundown Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). Following its refurbishment by Bradford Council in June 2026, support from Playdale Outdoor Play Equipment and Active Bradford’s JU:MP programme enabled the installation of new play equipment.
Further investment from Keighley Town Council and the Freemasons has since funded additional outdoor play equipment and youth shelters, creating a space for children, young people and adults of all abilities to enjoy. By providing free outdoor facilities close to home, the project is helping to remove financial and practical barriers to being active. The transformation has brought together support from the local council, community organisations and charitable partners, including One in a Million.
James Brown, CEO at Active Bradford, said: “This project is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when communities and partners work together. By working alongside our partners, we can support the physical, mental and social benefits of being active. We’re looking forward to seeing how this outdoor space will benefit the local community”
David Weston, Chair and Trustee of BBDCA, said: “We are delighted with what we have achieved together for Bracken Bank. On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to thank our local councillors, Active Bradford, Bradford Council, Keighley Town Council, Playdale Outdoor Play Equipment and the charities whose generous funding and ongoing support have helped bring this shared vision to life.
This has been a real community effort, and we are proud to welcome local residents and neighbouring communities to enjoy these fantastic outdoor facilities, free of charge, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We look forward to seeing people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds coming together, getting active and making the most of this space.”
Community members, partners and supporters will come together to celebrate with a Halloween-themed community event on Saturday 31st October, giving children and families an opportunity to enjoy the improved facilities and celebrate a new chapter for this much-valued community space.
